Madam CJ Walker was so many great things for us to be inspired by. If you haven't watched Nerflix's depiction of her in their limited series "Self Made" then you need to get a seat and tune in asap. This story was good in many ways and failed in so many others. Let's chat about the good. Here are my top ten reasons that I liked the series:
1. She appreciated the kindness that was bestowed upon her and gave praise and testimonials
2. She wanted to help Annie (the originator of the hair care product that helped her) grow her business
3. Even when Annie turned her down, she took her products, sold them and brought back all the money
To me this showed tenacity and a level of trustworthiness, plus an innate ability to connect and sell products
4. When she was turned down she took the idea and the product and literally made it better. She did research and development and came up with own version of the
products, which ended up outselling Annie's.
5. She had a passion and a vision for something no one else could see and her sheer joy led people to believe in her.
6. She continued to grow and take on more responsibility to help her family build a legacy.
7. Madam not only built for herself, but helped breed a heir of confidence and ownership in her sales girls, which she paid more than the average salary.
8. Marketing was her sweet spot. She knew that storytelling would allow people to feel the weight being lifted as she described how the products helped her. She was able
to sell the pain points and provide a solution. She also advised that it would take time for it to work, therefore setting expectations from the start.
9. Understanding the power of influencers was something that was powerful, but when she really connected with "her" people they invested in her.
10. Through all the odds and plenty of circumstances that could have broken her, she picked herself back up and continued to be great despite the odds.
Things that I didn't like or felt like they could have been better:
1. I did not enjoy the staged "ring" fights. I think it was a waste of time and more story could've been added.
2. I think it was unnecessary to make a mini Broadway musical through any of it. It seems as though the writers or producers felt we needed to be entertained as if her story wasn't compelling enough.
3. There was an issue of colorism that could have been explained better and was brushed over as far as the background was concerned.
4. I feel like we needed a little bit more of Annie's story so we could feel her pain and not have her be so villainous.
5. I need Blair Underwood to stop playing these black male stereotypical roles. It bothers me internally/
OK...that's enough bashing for now. Feel free to watch the video to get all the sites for my parents who are in quarantine with your kids. I know that its a change, but you can handle it and this video will give you some tools to aid in the process.
